What is Provigil?
Provigil or also known by its generic name ‘Modafinil’, is a special type of medication that enables its user to stay awake. In simple terms, it promotes a feeling of ‘wakefulness’ by altering the naturally present neurotransmitters (chemicals) in the brain.It is a solution for people who experience excessive sleepiness that is caused as a result of narcolepsy, sleep apnea or sleep disorders caused due to work shift. Although, if you are suffering from skin rash or some sort of an allergic reaction, then Provigil is a strict no. It is known to cause skin severe reactions in the form of rashes. It is advisable to consult your doctor before taking these tablets. It is also extremely important for you to discuss any sort of diseases that you are suffering from related to liver, heart, kidney etc. before hand with your doctor or consultant in case you are thinking about going for this medication.
Before taking this medication:
If you are suffering from the following diseases then Provigil is not the medicine for you:
- Angina (chest pains)
- Cirrhosis or other liver related problems
- Kidney disease
- High blood pressure, heart disease, a history of heart attack
- History of mental illness
- History of drug addiction or alcoholism
It is not a known fact if this medication is harmful for unborn child; hence it is unadvisable to give a pregnant woman this medicine in order to avoid any sort of pregnancy related complications. Although, it has proven to make birth control less effective.
How to take Provigil?
In order to avoid any confusion or side effects, a strict consumption of the medicine as advised by your doctor is recommended. Do not take too much or too little than the prescribed dosage. Never share it with any other person as it is a habit – forming drug.
Usually consumed in morning with an aim of preventing day time sleepiness. It can also be taken one hour before going for your daily work shift if you are looking to combat work time sleep disorders. You can also take it with or without food for a period of twelve weeks or less. Just like any other tablet keep it away from moisture and heat and store it in a cabinet at room temperature. Since this drug is easily addictive, make sure that you do not go over the prescribed quantity under any circumstances.
If you experience difficulty in breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat then it is advisable to seek immediate emergency treatment.
You will need to stop Provigil consumption if you experience the following side effects:
- Skin rash ; blisters ; skin peeling
- Trouble in swallowing ; sores in mouth
- Shortness of breath ; fever
- Dark urine
- Swelling in legs
- Depression ; anxiety ; suicidal thoughts
- Hallucinations ; aggressions ; unusual thoughts or actions
- Nausea ; diarrhea
- Uneven heartbeats ; upset stomach
